Aichi 愛知県

Emblem of Aichi

Origin

Selected from 1,600 designs submitted to a contest marking the 5th National Sports Festival held in Aichi in 1950, and established on August 15 of that year together with the prefectural song. The three hiragana あ (a), い (i), and ち (chi) — spelling Aichi — are combined into a single figure expressing the prefecture's outward, seaborne development on the Pacific and a hope-filled rising sun over cresting waves (kyokujitsu hatō).

Adopted

August 15, 1950
