Origin
The emblem was adopted on October 1, 1966 (Prefectural Notice No. 219), based on a design selected through a public competition held that year. Three instances of the kanji 人 (hito, "person") are arranged to form the character 山 (yama, "mountain"), the first character of Yamanashi, expressing harmony and cooperation among the prefecture's residents. The figure is enclosed in a rhombus with jagged corners, based on the family crest of the Takeda clan (the Takeda rhombus), which once ruled Kai Province, and evoking the summit of Mount Fuji.
