Yamagata 山形県
Origin
The prefectural flag was established by notice in March 1963. The central ∧∧∧ motif represents both the kanji 山 (yama, 'mountain') of Yamagata and the Mogami River that flows through the prefecture; the sharp angles express development, and the white coloring evokes the snow of Mt. Zao's famous frost-covered trees and the unaffected character of the prefecture's people. The background color, originally a deep blue-green chosen as a complement to the red sun of the national flag, was changed to a bright blue by notice of April 16, 1971.
