The kanji 新 (shin, "new"), the first character of Niigata, is placed at the center, with the katakana ガタ (gata) stylized into a circular pattern around it. The emblem symbolizes harmony and hope, carrying a wish for the smooth development of the prefecture. Adopted on August 23, 1963.
