Origin

Chosen from 437 entries in a design contest marking the completion of the prefectural office building in 1964 and promulgated on April 20 of that year; details of the design were revised in 2001. The hiragana み (mi), the first syllable of Mie, is stylized as an upward arrow expressing the prefecture's leap forward, while the circle at lower left represents the world-renowned pearl culture of Ago Bay.
