Origin

The characters 日向 (Hyuga, the old provincial name of the Miyazaki region) are stylized: the kanji 日 (hi, "sun") sits at the center, and the kanji 向 (ko, "facing") extends in three directions, expressing the prefecture leaping forward. Adopted on January 14, 1912.
