Established by prefectural notice No. 378 of December 28, 1909, the emblem combines the katakana チ (chi) and ハ (ha), the two syllables of Chiba. Apart from Tokyo, whose emblem was inherited from the former City of Tokyo, it is the oldest prefectural emblem still in use.
