Origin

Based on publicly solicited designs and established by prefectural notice No. 310 of April 26, 1969. The katakana ワ (wa), the first syllable of Wakayama, is stylized as a spreading fan, expressing the boundless future development of southern Kishū and the enterprising, generous character of the prefecture's people.
